The Chinese song, which gave rise to this composition, leads the poetic title "The silk shine on the willow leaves". It reached Europe as early as the eighteenth century and was later used by Carl Maria von Weber in his "Turandot" overture, and later in his suite by Paul Hindemith in his "Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes by Weber".
