The G Major Rondo (originally in F) exists in two piano versions. It was initially composed as an isolated piano piece in 1786. Then a year later, in need of a third movement to finish his F Major Piano Sonata, K. 533, Mozart reworked this Rondo, adapting it to the highly contrapuntal style of his last and perhaps greatest Sonata. He changed articulations and added a soaring 27-bar fugal stretto, based on the first two measures of the opening theme to create, in effect, a cadenza that acts as a culmination of the work’s thematic development...
