Mushel Sonatina for Flute & Piano
Georgi Mushel composed his Sonatina for Flute and Piano in 1948. This three-movement work exemplifies his compositional style, blending European classical forms with elements of Uzbek folk music. Sonatine was first published during the Soviet times in 1951 by Muzgiz, Moscow. It was one of the first pieces to be written for a wind instrument in Uzbek Soviet music history. Being an inseparable part of the chamber music heritage of Soviet Uzbekistan, and ultimately of the broadest reaches of Soviet music, Mushel’s composition was regularly performed during Soviet times by Soviet musicians. However, the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 caused political and cultural disruption. As a result, many works of Soviet-era composers, including Mushel’s Sonatina for Flute and Piano, were at risk of being forgotten and lost.
This re-engraved edition of this Sonatina for Flute and Piano is the result of research project that investigated the influences of traditional Uzbek folk elements in Mushel’s music. It presents performance and interpretation guidelines that is informed by the researcher’s experiences with Uzbek music, her knowledge of its culture, and exploration of specific performance practices that are beyond the score. The purpose of this publication was to revive the Sonatina for Flute and Piano, to enrich the chamber music repertoire of Western musicians, and to raise awareness of the music of Uzbek Soviet composer Georgi Mushel.
