Women Wear Capes for solo flute
Alex Manton (1981)
Program Notes
Founded in 2020 by Eliza Shephard, March of the Women is a curated global collection
of flute works by female composers, celebrating International Women’s Day and
Women’s History Month. ‘Women Wear Capes’ was commissioned by Eliza Shephard
for the 2025 March of the Women: Collaborations project.
This work was crafted with the conceptual idea of defying expectations. Its meaning is
twofold – to challenge the listener’s assumptions of both women and the flute.
‘Women Wear Capes’ draws on percussive, gritty and confronting extended techniques,
to ‘normalise’ the use of these techniques in flute repertoire. The powerful,
strong and determined character of the work is illuminated by harsh articulations and
timbres, produced by extended techniques and percussive grooves.
This work not only captures the essence of Eliza’s incredible artistry, effervescence, grit
and formidable drive, but is intended as a work of empowerment for all women
