Manton , Alex – Streets of Spain for solo flute
“Streets of Spain” was awarded first place in the 2017 Australian Flute Festival Composition Competition that was held at the Griffiths University Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane, Australia. The stimulus for the competition was to create an original work inspired by the Spanish composer Enrique Granados. I drew inspiration from traditional Spanish musical elements including the use of percussive timbres and semiquaver castanet-like rhythms in the opening section. The vocalisation of the ‘t’ and ‘k’ should be quite breathy, which can be achieved with a very loose embouchure, before a regular beat boxing timbre is incorporated from bar 13. It is important to note that a strict tempo must be adhered to in the groove sections to successfully achieve the dance rhythms and syncopation employed. The overall tonality is based on E Locrian mode with a #6, however it also contains moments of D harmonic minor and D major. The flutter tonguing is designed to emulate the ‘thrumming’ of a flamenco guitar and should be played with energy and intensity. The Andante section was very much inspired by the romantic elements found within the music of Granados and his rich harmonic language.
