The Italian Ernesto Köhler (1849-1907) was from 1871 as a flautist at the Imperial Ballet active. In 1900 he was officially named the first flutist of the Imperial Opera, one of the most sought-after positions in the Tsarist Empire. In St. Petersburg he had the opportunity to devote himself increasingly to composition. The salon piece "Papillon" Op. 30 No. 4 was so popular that it was recorded in 1910 for the Victor Talking Machine Company in New York on record.
