Notes from the composer:
I have always been interested in dance forms, especially of the folk variety. My first foray into writing original dances neatly combined this interest with my Polish upbringing. A personal challenge was to compose an authentically-sounding set of Polish dances and yet, make them sound as if they have always been part of the Polish music tradition. Whilst these pieces are original, I could not stop myself from injecting my Mazurek with extra ‘Polishness’ by quoting my uncle Waldemar Kazanecki’s timeless theme from the Polish movie classic ‘Noce i Dnie’ (‘Days and Nights’), adapted from his original Viennese waltz to my Mazurek. A snippet of the Polish national anthem ‘Mazurek Dąbrowskiego' can be heard in my Polonez.
Each dance is a dedication to a member of my family.
I originally scored this set of pieces for clarinet, viola and piano. Since then, much bigger versions for symphony orchestra and wind orchestra have been added. I feel, however, that this adaptation for solo flute and piano highlights the simplicity and charm of these folk-dance forms the best.
Notes from the publisher:
These charming dances are of varying difficulty; as a rough guide, No.1: Gr. 5-6, No. 2: Gr. 6-7, No. 3: Gr. 4-5, No. 4: Gr. 5, No. 5: Gr. 6-7. A great value set for a rising ability flautist!
