In the summer of 1919, shortly after the end of World War I, the composer wrote this four-movement work at the age of 62. In October of the same year, it was premiered by Felix Salmond Solo and the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Elgar himself. The famous performance by Jacqueline du Pré (1945-1987), a female cellist who experienced a tragic second half of her life, is widely known, and is a popular cello concerto work that is on par with Dvořák's cello concerto.
It is accompanied by a suggestive bow and fingering by Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, a leading cellist in Japan.
