Breitkopf & Härtel, founded in 1719, is the oldest music publishing company in the world. Musica Rara was founded in London in 1950. The publisher's program soon took on a clear profile with wind literature of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries: an area which was under-represented by publishers until then. Breitkopf & Härtel acquired the publishing house in 2000, and since then has been continuing the Musica Rara program in a separate catalogue through improved reprints and new editions.
