It is in three movements. The first is based around lively, dancing 7\/8 rhythms, with playful changes in metre, and ideas thrown between the instruments in a busy texture. There is a slow, reflective middle section, much more serious in tone, featuring various flute solos. This gradually returns to the opening ideas of the movement in an abbreviated reprise, before the music ends, fading away into the distance, on the dancing rhythm of the opening. The second movement is slow, and suggests a misty dawn landscape with its spare, calm texture. This is followed by a series of lonely solo flute melodies which gradually combine and build up into a rich, imitative texture. Tension and dissonance builds, but at the climax a solemn, low melody on bass and alto flute returns the music to a reprise of the first section, which ends very quietly and mysteriously. The rousing final movement returns to the joyful dancing rhythms of the first, now based around 10\/8 time. It is a rondo, with many playful variations of the returning theme shared between all of the flutes at each appearance, while contrasting episodes are a little more relaxed and lyrical. There are only a few baroque examples (which were really written for recorder) and a smattering of recent works. When Andrew Macleod, Principal Piccolo for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra suggested I write him a concerto, I immediately thought it was a great idea. And having heard Andrew's playing, I was convinced of the overriding artistic merits, not just the practicality of adding to a small body of works.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe piccolo has, of course, the great advantage of being able to cut through loud orchestral textures, yet it also has many more possibilities not often explored in the orchestral repertoire.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis concerto is in two movements. The first movement is simply titled \"Hymn\". Throughout this movement I have used fragments of \"Love Unknown\" a hymn tune by English composer John Ireland. My own reason for using the hymn tune has more to do with its message of compassion and humanity rather than suggesting strict religious observance. Composed in a symmetrical form the hymn is used as a structural road-map and also the basis for motivic material. The movement falls somewhere in the cracks between a Chorale Prelude - which is a form found in organ works where a hymn tune is essentially embellished and considerably expanded - and a set of variations over a ground bass.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe movement begins in an understated and mostly lyrical fashion, before launching into a more dance-like, climactic section whereupon the musical argument becomes more diffuse. The section of the tune with the lyrics \"love to the loveless shown\" is given special importance in this central part of the piece with a short insistent motive which is then contradicted by other, more argumentative elements as though this \"bleeding heart\" notion is being interrogated by a shock jock. The contradictory music is jagged and spiky, coloured mainly by the upper woodwinds and tuned percussion. As the material is developed it becomes more abstract until an angry outburst seems to settle the score giving way to a return of the more optimistic sounding sections heard earlier, this time bursting into a clear-voiced enunciation of the compassion theme. An understated and slightly saddened version of John Ireland's hymn is stated in full for the first time at the end of the piece in the lower strings, climbing through the upper registers at last reaching the solo piccolo.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe second movement, Scherzo (which is Italian for 'joke' although in musical terms connotes a fast-moving, humorous piece) is subtitled \"Wheels within Wheels\" suggesting material that moves simultaneously at different speeds. The initials of \"wheels within wheels\" - www - also hints at the impact of the information age and the sense of overwhelming speed at which our digital world operates. Furthermore, the Old Testament book of Ezekiel makes mention of a vision of the divine throne and four heavenly creatures with chariots of wheels within wheels. Although religious overtones were not deliberately sought out, it is nice to know that you are on the same page as divine creatures.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eReplete with twisting, turning solo piccolo passages over percussive orchestral textures, there are humorous interjections from the tuba, bass clarinet and contrabassoon (strange buddies indeed for the piccolo, but perhaps also the other instruments that didn't get invited to the concerto-prom) and also the otherworldly sounds of tuned cowbells.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis Scherzo is written in a kind of binary form, whereby the two halves of the movement are separated by an extended cadenza. Here the solo piccolo can really show its wares as an instrument capable of many surprises, including a number of surprisingly soft high notes and some lush low-register sounds. This launches the music towards a large dance-like climax before the wheels seem to briefly and dangerously jump out of their cogs. The pieces are arrangements from a series called Eye–Tunes, originally published by Spartan Press. A number of the pieces have been road–tested countless times in recitals (for example, The Moth Collector received its debut as an encore at Wigmore Hall in 2009) — indeed their consistently positive reception as wholesome, ‘proper’ pieces has led naturally to these albums aimed at the early and intermediate flautist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs with the piano versions, the titles of the pieces are crucial in suggesting musical character, and I must once again thank Gillian Poznansky for dreaming up many of the more memorable ones; Gillian also oversaw the score editing process and helped to ensure the preparation of an album that embraces pieces of an appropriate technical level, set in suitable keys etc.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eMusical spirit\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003eClues to the overall spirit of the music often spill over from the piano accompaniments. Hence teachers should look beyond the surface details in the flute parts to gain a fuller awareness of the sound–world of each piece. ‘Swing’ rhythms are perhaps best thought of as lying somewhere between dotted and triplet figures — in other words, rhythm without a straitjacket. Again, look to the piano parts for assistance here, as these are likely to be highly suggestive. Details of dynamics and articulation are central to lending phrases a sense of progression — search out the high–points, particularly in longer cantabile lines where sensible breathing places become even more important, and bear in mind that subtle alterations to the speed often affect where you breathe, too. Likewise, follow your nose when it comes to making sense of other score markings — your own instincts are potentially as worthy as the composer’s(!) — and only by experimenting with different ways of doing things can you discover what sits most comfortably. On this note, don’t stress unduly about the metronome marks, which are only intended to be a guide, not a rod for your back. Although buoyancy is a key attribute (in slow music as well as fast), rarely is this achieved through speed alone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eEnsemble playing\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is often best for flautists to conquer their parts in isolation, rather than to attempt to follow a pianist’s optimistic tempo from day one. The tune is frequently shared by the piano part, so bear in mind that bars rest are only temporary pauses in your part — the music carries on, even when you’ve paused, and you need to be aware of what is going on within the overall musical canvas. Ensembles rarely spend sufficient time rehearsing the links between sections, or the passing of the musical baton to and fro, and yet it is here that things typically go skew–whiff in the heat of a performance. So, why not practise starting (and restarting) in sensible places within the music, not just at the beginning.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eBuilding a sense of performance\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003ePractice rarely makes perfect, but it will usually make the all–important difference. Be flexible in your approach, and as I’ve written elsewhere, roll up your sleeves and have fun with these pieces. “The devil is in the detail”, so they say, and this means going beyond the obvious and delving into your own imagination. Care about your sound, care about ends of phrases, and most of all, care about putting smiles on your audience’s faces; after all, they’re the people who throw roses at your feet when you play nicely (or tomatoes when you don’t). It’s your job to keep them awake, not the composer’s (he’s already done his bit), and this can only be achieved by presenting yourself on stage as confidently as a double–glazing salesman at your front door. The art of performance isn’t so different from composition, when you stop to think about it — the black marks etched onto the page represent the composer’s best attempts at communicating something to you, whereas in a performance it falls on you to communicate something memorable on the spur of the moment to your audience. Neither role can succeed without some understanding of the other. Present your performance as something precious that comes from inside you; it might only last a minute or two, but if you do it well you can bring a tear to the vicar’s eye and a proud smile to granny’s face — so give generously; it’s well worth your effort.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003eBacking tracks\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBacking tracks are free to download (see back cover) and will permit run–throughs and performances in situations that cannot accommodate a piano, which is an ever–present reality for teachers operating in small spaces with a ghetto–blaster. Unlike a number of backing tracks included in similar books, which are essentially computer MIDI files rendered into audio files, these are real piano parts recorded independently from the flute and piano performances. Hence they are not ‘quantised’, which means that a certain degree of flexibility has been built into the playing that, one hopes, will lead to more musical, less mechanical playing. Tempo clicks have been put in, generally at the start of tracks, but only where there isn’t a piano introduction to set the pace, and these have been marked into the scores. A few of the faster pieces also have slower versions to alleviate the difficulties one might encounter early in the learning process. Furthermore, these days, a variety of tempo–changing software packages are freely downloadable, which will allow you to slow down (or indeed, speed up) backing tracks without altering the pitch, so you might want to experiment with these.
